Default Thermostat in the 2.8

I went and looked into a 1995 A6 Quattro today. The only thing that is wrong with this car is either the coolant temp guage is failed or it has a failed thermostat. What is happening is when the car is running, the coolant temp guage does not move at all. Has anyone else ever had this happen? What was the cause? If it is the thermostat how hard is it to R&I one?

Regards,
Craig

I ASSUME the 2.8l in a 95 is basically the same engine as in my 00. Do a search on timing belt replacement on the 2.8l engine to get an idea of cost and time involved. If it did need a thermostat, I suggest walking away unless the price is low enough to cover the 1200.00 dollar TB job.

I am hoping to be able to pick the car up for $3K. The interior on this car is perfect. There is not a single rip, stain, or wrinkle. I am going to take the car ona drive tomorrow morning so I can take it to a buddys shop and get it on a lift to verify that it wont need anything else. Also when you say $1200 job for the TB does that include parts and labor or just parts?

1200.00 would be parts and labor, mine came out to 1400.00 but I have read other people getting theirs done for 900.00 so I think 1200.00 is a safe estimate. Again this all assumes that your thermostat is where mine is behind the water pump requiring you to tear the front of the car apart. Also it could be a coolant temp sensor that has gone bad. I do not know if that sensor going bad would set a check engine light or not. But that would be a cheap fix.
