Default Thunk noise/transmission issue

Hi All,

I have a 2004 A6 S-Line, 72,000kms. When I first got it 12,000kms ago, it would sometimes hesitate when shifting from park to reverse or drive when cold. The dealer told me that it was likely due to sitting on their lot for 3 months (it is certified, passed full inspection) and it should go away after being driven every day for a while, which it did. However, last night I was merging and floored it to get in front of a car that did not want to let me in. It accelerated fine but when eased off on the gas after merging, the transmission made a thunk noise as it shifted back into 5th and you could feel it. This has only happened once and it drove fine after that. But, given the transmission issue I had when I picked it up, I am wondering if there may be a transmission fluid issue...from what I understand the transmission fluid is supposed to be "lifetime" but many recommend changing it. The “transmission condition” on the Audi Certified inspection report was checked “yes” as meeting requirements for certification so I assume they must have checked the transmission fluid and it was fine...

…any ideas on what else it could be?

Thanks!

I say do a tranny drain with filter change. IT'll give you peace of mind and most likely eliminate that thunk you hear every now and then.

Hmmm...found a review of a 2002 A4 (with the same tiptronic transmission as my A6) and this was in it...."the five-speed Tiptronic can be annoyingly indecisive during passing maneuvers, and dropping the throttle occasionally provokes embarrassing driveline thunk"
Odd...never encountered it before but apparently its a common characteristic of the tiptronic tranny....I'll push my dealership for a trans fluid change anyways.
