Default Tie Rods / Timing Belt

I'm replacing the tie rods on my 2000 A6 4.2L Quattro. Good times. Any tips or tricks? Do I really need that special tool the manual suggests, or has anyone done it with a regular wrench?

Also, in a couple of months, I will be replacing my timing belt. The manual has 2 pages on the process, and all the videos I can find are of the V6 models. Does anyone know a link for the V8 timing belt replacement? I'd like to save the $1100 in labor and do this myself, but I want to make sure I have my junk straight first.

My experience level is slightly above average, but not expert, as far as car maintenance. My only fault is that I don't have a garage or tools of my own. I have access to these things though, if I really need them.

So, if there's tips and such, please let me know!

you dont need any special tools. atleast on my 2.8, unscrew the top bolt while the pinch bolt is still in, because then it will just spin. then remove the pinch bolt, and remove from the inner rod.

I don't know anything about V8 timing belt. As for the tie rod ends, count the turns as you are backing it out. You thread it back in with the same number of turns.

If you want to replace those inner tie rod ends, you will need the special tool. You should be able to borrow one from AutoZone.
