Don't get it checked out. Get it replaced. The kit itself costs around $300 but it really depends on the area for the labor cost.

You can't visually check it until you remove almost everything including the front end. Your best bet is to hope it was done at an Audi dealer so you can check their service records for your car.

The below para. isstraight from the dealer; I've got 96K on my '03 2.7T A6...it's time to bite the bullet and get my timing belt done! Are there any parts the dealer may have left out that any of you know should be replaced along with it? He mentions the timing belt, tensioners, rollers, coolant, thermostat, ans water pump.

My name is Ray, and I’ll be responding to your questions pertaining to maintenance for you 03 A6 2.7T.
As for maintenance requirements, on the 03 models they run on every 1 year/10,000 mile intervals.
So to answer your question pertaining to a 75,000 mile maintenance interval, there is not one that applies, however depending on when the oil was
changed, you would go 1 year/10,000 miles between oil and filter changes.
Looking at the maintenance price for the 80,000 mile service for your 2.7T, it would be $909.95 + tax. Service would include oil and filter change,
tire rotation, spark plugs being replaced, air and pollen filter replacement, fuel injector flush, brake flush, fuel and engine additives, checked stored memory in the electronic control module, lubricate the sunroof, door latches, and the hood and trunk latches, road test vehicle.
As for the timing belt, that would be an additional charge of $969.00, and the price includes the timing belt, tensioner, rollers, coolant, thermostat, and
water pump.
On the road test we would test the clutch to insure that it is operating properly, if not, unfortunately, there is not any overlapping labor, so there would not be a cost savings to replace it at the same time that the service and the timing belt are replaced.

I'm a believer in regular maintenance, but the work your dealer recommended for about $909 would cost about $400 at a good independent shop. I just had spark plugs and the gas filter replaced for about $200 and when he did the brake fluid a little while ago, it was about $150. Throw in a pollen filter for $25.

My TB parts cost $360 and the labor (same shop) was 6 hours at $75/hr. He recently jumped his rates to $78. I guess California is more expensive than the midwest.

 

Pays to be a DIY guy for some of those aswell

I just paid $1500.02 for Timing, Water Pump, Oil & OilFilter, Anti-Flush and a couple of Ting-a-Ma-Jigs... Oh, and he gave a loaner, and he is not a "Stealership!" I am in Northern Maryland, so everyting is "WTF!!!!" If I weren't a Sloth and confident in HR Motor Cars. I could have driven to PA or DE and saved .89 Cents.
