Default Timing Belt job

Hey everyone,

Its been awhile since I've been on here but I just hit 98K on my 2001 2.7t A6 and we all know the timing belt needs to be replaced. Im going to do it myself and I'm ordering the TB kit from blauparts but I was just wondering if anyone else on here has done it themselves and how difficult is it? Is there any tricky situations to look for when I'm in there and any tricks to do anything easier? Any thing to do to avoid problems?

The standard Blauparts kit did not include the GH24017 Damper Timing Belt V6-30v 98-05 for $89.95. It was recommended to change that, too. This was a March 2007 price.

not that difficult if your going to change the front cam seals you will need the cam locking bar mine were in good shape and not leaking so i didnt change them, its not recommend to change the crank seal unless it is leaking there will be a warning supplied in the kit. you want the kit that has all the pulleys and definitely use a torque wench when setting the timing belt tensioner very important. one hint if you dont replace the cam seals it is easier to get the belt on the last pulley if you leave it loose and tighten after you have the belt on, it helps to have 2 people while installing the belt you will have to move the cam slightly back to get it in the proper notch, mark all cams and crank with a scribe before you start and you should have no problems, there will be some play when you install the crank pulley with the timing mark on it so mark the crank position so you can align the timing mark or use the crank lock pin. when purging the coolant it i easier if you use a little compressed air to the overflow tank it speeds things up.

Well I just realized how expensive renting the tools from BlauParts is so I'm wondering how difficult is it without renting these special tools?

As long as you mark everything carefully, redundantly and fully before disassembly, you won't have a problem doing the job without the special tools.

Go for it!

Mine is a 1998 AUDI A4 V6 engine and I have to do it soon, got a quote of $1, 200 including labor and parts (timing belt, drive belt, water pump, antifreeze, tensioner, tensioner roller, damper, leaver(?) ) ... makes me think a little bit as u can see the price isn't that cheap. And those are all OEM parts in this price.

Any suggestions?! If it is fair?! Or isi it very hard to do it on your own?!

I have done a few t-belt kits already. And its not hard to do. Just take your time and make sure you get it done right.

http://www.ecwerks.com/timing-belt-kit-2-8-2-7t-v6.html

Also get coolant. You will have to drain most of it when you do the water pump and thermostat.

So you can have everything done for under $400 and takes about 4-5 hours if its your first time.
