Default Timing belt job-DIY

The wifes car just past 97K and is in need of a timing belt job.
2 shops in my area quoted me prices of over $2000 so I'm thinking about doing it myself.
So my questions to everyone are:
how hard is the job,
how long will it take,
how much will it cost,
and are there special tools involved and tips and tricks to know before starting the project?
Thanks for your help
Dave

Piece of cake with a manual. Actually one of my favourite jobs!
It will probably take a weekend first time
Parts will be $300-400 depending on where you buy/what you replace
Tools will run you $100 or so on eBay for engine-specific tools, in addition you will need a 3-arm puller, a 32mm open end wrench, a good set of sockets, torque wrench, hex bits

$2000 is very high - the going rate seems to be $1400.

One more thing: At 97K you are on borrowed time! Best make a decision very soon.

What engine? I did my own 2.8 and it was quite as bad as I thought it would be!

The wifes car is a 1999 A6 Avant 2.8 V6.
It also has an oil leak coming from the drivers side(ground) of the motor.
I was told that it was a bad gasket having to do with the cam shaft that should be fixed if I'm going in that far.
What repair manual is everyone using?
Is one better than another?
I'm looking at using the timimg belt kit from Blauparts.
Anyone have some input on this kit?
Thanks again,
Dave
