Post Tips on buying an A6

I am looking at 2001 Audi A6 4.2L - $ 7850.00

Its got 10705 miles, kept in great condition. The interior is very clean and so is the motor. Everything shifts and drives fine. I had a question about the reliability of the 4.2L A6, with so many miles.

It has like everything. Heated seats, memory seats, Bose Audio System, and crap. Blah Blah I already owned an A4. So, ya just tell me how good these A6's are and the 4.2L V8 are. Otherwise I'm choosing between:

2001-2002 Audi A6 2.7t and 4.2L

2001-2002 Audi A4 1.8t and 2.8 V6

So, yeah how reliable are the A6 and the 4.2L V8 from Audi. And is the price worth it?

first i havent heard the best about 4.2l - not anything good about them

i own a 2002 3.0 and im not the happiest about it well the engine
so in my opinion outta experience and what friends have said go with a 2002 a4 1.8t or a62.7t you'll be happier than me with the 3.0 but i love the a6 style

second with that number of miles check to see if/when the brakes have been replaced and same thing with the timing belt, water pump, and serp. belt
ask to see if the transmission has ever been flushed

i bought my 2002 a6 3.0 6 months ago and it seemed jsut fine, interior was perfect all the options but 3 months into it i had to replace all brakes and pads and now im saving money up to do the timing belt service.water pump. serp. belt and transmission flush
i also have a noise when i turn my heater on now and the noise is up near the fan so who knows with that, and my car only had 90,000 miles on it

but the price is ok that your looking at if the timing service is done already i paid 8800 in Chicago 6 months ago

but def get an a4 1.8 or a6 2.7t
take your time when looking for one, i didnt and ouch
check the forums here, ppl are posting great cars for sale at really fair prices

From everything I read on the forum, the 4.2l owners love them -- lot's of power and torque, very reliable. Complaints seem to be the lack of aftermarket performance parts and gas mileage.

Speaking for the 2.7T, I am very happy with mine and have had few problems at 128k miles. Everything works except the headlight washers. My only concern is the expense if/when I have to replace the turbos. The secret seems to be doing all the maintenance, using the right oil, and not abusing the vehicle. I drive it fast, but don't accelerate hard or bang it through the MI potholes if I can avoid them. Gas mileage is so-so, but it's a heavy car with the overhead of quattro.

If you're used to the gas mileage of an A4 1.8T, you'll be disappointed in either choice.

4.2 is great, mine has been extremely reliable, now at 122K miles.

To be sure you are getting a good one, have a dealer run the VIN to check for past service.
Have a shop check front suspension (and rear while your at it) for wear of tie rods.
Have them assess the transmission-- seems to be about the only achilles heel, particularly in the earlier 4.2s.
