Tire size for a 96 A6
The tire size I have now are 195/65-15 and need replacing. Inside the fuel door there is a chart that shows tire pressure vs load weight.
The chart show spec's if I was running 215/60-15. I was thinking of going with this size because they are close to the overall diameter 25.0 vs 25.2, so it should not affect the speedo/odo very much. But the 215/60-15 are about 1" wider has anyone made this switch? I was looking at the BF Goodrich Traction T/A's. I drive a mix of highway/country/dirt roads in upstate NY where condidtions can change from one mile to the next. Thanks

RE: Tire size for a 96 A6
I was looking around the inside of the front wheel well area. I noticed that with the stock tire size (195/65-15) that there is only about 1/2" clearence on the inside of the tire and something to do with the steering mount. This close section is near the top of the tire. After finding this I really do not want to go with a wider tire. I have seen several posts about wheel spacers. Is that what I would need to do and could I just add it to the front wheels or does it need to be done to all wheels? Would the wheel lug bolts be long enough or do I have this idea all wrong?

no problem there mate, 195/65/15 is a large tyre so going to a 205/55/15 = lower profile (less thickness of wall and only a little broader with better foot print) so it will miss every thing you are concerned with though it will reduce the turning circle because of the width, the 205/55/16 would be the same but would still have little effect to any clearances but you will notice the handling will be much improved but saying that 16" is now considered an oddball size so I would go with 17"s

I see what you mean by changing from the 195/65-15's to the 205/55-15. Sounds like the way for me to go. Although it will throw off the speedo by 4% according to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit
Which I think means I'll be going slower then I indicate. aka SloRide
