'TRS' and 'MFS' are the same thing?!
 

Hello there,

I own a 2005 A6 model and got myself the infamous "17090 - Transmission Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal P0706 - 000"

After reading hundreds of posts I came to the primary conclusion that “Transmission Range Sensor’ is the same as “Multi function switch’, as even the DIY instructions I found quote both part names during explanations to the common 'gears flashing', 'no reverse' and 'no gear indication' problems:

While digging more I found this comment in a thread:


“Replace the TR switch.
To do that you need the radio removal keys to pull the radio, take out the A/C control head, the ash tray, pull up the trim around the shifter, remove the shifter knob, then pull up the TR switch. Im sure you can find a DIY on the web if you google it.”

Sorry for the long post but I’ve been reading a lot and need to make sure in order to get my hands dirty with the right part!

I'm pretty sure Auditech can confirm this: the two parts are distinct. The TRS is under the shifter as you found the reference. However, the MultiFunction Swith is attached to the transmission case.
This is probably what you're looking for when refering to the MFS.
As far as the code, you need to find out to which part it relates exactly before starting to tear down the car and buying a part that may be good otherwise.
