My trunk button used to work until the battery died. Subsequently when I reporgrammed it, I didn't do it quite correctly, so the trunk button stopped worked.

It's worth reprogramming the key fob to see if it fixes it. There is no need to go to the dealer for this (I think) but it depends on whether you have the imobilizer in the key fob or not. Mine didn't so it was not an issue.

I thought my trunk button was not working until today. I figured out instead of just pressing it I had to press and hold it. Try that and I think you should be ok

My '03 is off the road and covered. But I vaguely remember all the button does is unlock the trunk. You still have to reach under and open it. Most American cars actually spring the trunk open when you "pop" it but not the German cars.

But I could be wrong, too.

Onmy 1996 A6 2.8L the wires to the push button in the glove compartment were broken, anda plastic leveron the trunk lock cylinder was broken. When I bought the car the truck would not open even with a key, so I workedthru the ski bag opening in the back seat to remove the latch keeper. The plasticlink leverand switchesfroma redesigned newer usedlock cylinder will fit onthe older lock cylinder, so there is onlyone key.The lock cylinders are actuated by a vacuum pump under the rear seat, so check the vacuum line from thepump to the trunk lock cylinder.Look for a broken vacuum hosenear the trunk hinge.
Thenight IpickedthisA6 up fromthe used car dealer, the sun roof popped open at a gas station when Ilocked the doors. So, another reason it doesn't work might be that the previous owners or their agents tampered with a few things.
Never buy any car with a bad engine, transmission, bent frame or other costly items.
The Bentley CD manual doesn't give much information on the truck lock cylinder with remote vacuum actuation. Bewareof missinformationabout not needing a shop manual, just because it doesn't cover everything.

On a 1996 A6 thetwo trunk switch wires at the glove compartment can fail behind the right hand rear glove compartment pivot and where they pass through a brass pivot pin with sharp internal edges. Also, these two insulated wires are too stiff for this application.Perhaps the plastic insulation hardened with age.The sharp internal edge may be removed from the brass pin with a sharpcountersink tool.
