Unhappy Tyre cap stuck

I have an Audi A6 3.0 Le-mans. The onboard typre pressure monitoring told me tyre pressure was low. So went to the garage to pump some air. Shocked to find couldn't get the typre cap off - the cap (which is metal) has bonded to the valve which is also metal. Garage tried with pliers and gave up as they didn't want to damage the tyre monitoting system. Called RAC - they were also reluctant. Took it to Audi as it is still under warranty and they way it will cost £300 to put in new metal ones - shock horror. I am trying to speak to customer services to say why isn;t this covered by warranty and why can't they put in rubber caps and valves to make sure this does not happen again. Is this a known issue?
