Default Universal Antifreeze

Not that it is very much less expensive, just closer to get to. VW/Audi wants about 21 bucks a gallon for their red stuff. Store near me has Prestone and the like, still 10 bucks per gallon of 50/50 (20 bucks for full strength), so, does the "Compatible with ALL colors" mean that it WILL mix and not clot the VW stuff?

Cheers,

George

I had a reputable Indy mechanic tell me that VWs G12 coolant and GM's pink Dexcool are identical. I've been using Dexcool in a Passat and A4 with the 2.8 and in an A6 with the 2.7T with no issues.

I heard you can use any coolant as long as you drain the g12 (dont mix it) cuz it "gels up" when you mix the g12 and other stuff ...
is that true??

cuz a few weeks ago i was a lil low on coolant and used some of that universal stuff....

Seems to me that if they call it "universal" and a problem occurs, they will be on the hook for the repairs.

Prestone is advertising on TV that their Afreeze will work with any make and model vehicle and they do not say you have to drain the whole system, but why take a chance?????? What is an extra $30 - $40 to be sure you don't have a problem? If you wanted to be cheep you could have purchased a Yugo or Ford...

I get my Afreeze from either Blauparts (with the timing belt kit) or Force Five in Concord NH for a lot less than $21 per 1.5 liter full strength...

Yes, that's true - if you get all of the G12 out (flush the hell out of the radiator), you can use whatever you want. Keep in mind that Audi had something in mind when they specified G12 for our cars.
