Default Used A6 issues- any ideas/suggestions.

Earlier this year I found what I thought was a gem of a car. A loaded02 A6 4.2 with 19k on the clock- former program car for an exec that never drove it. Body and paint were perfect. Leather needed to be cleaned but no rips/tears. Car drove VERY well- the AWD was amazing. A few weeks after I bought it I took it to the dealer for a "courtesy" once over. It needed a new CV boot and axle as well as replacing the trans ouput shaft seal. The technician explained these were very common and recurring problems on these cars and to expect to repeat these repairs several times as long as Iown the car. I replaced the cv boot and axle myself and ended upreplacingthe brakes/rotors/calipers at the same time because I noticedthey had been damaged but weren't caught by the dealer- no biggy but parts were darn near 1100 bucks plus the 1/2 a day it took to install them. I looked everywhere for the fix for the the other problem- the seal. Not only can that part notpurchased anywhere but the dealership they arealso the only ones around that will install it. Theygave me a discount to the tune of $750to include parts and labor (some discount!!) The tech went on to say that I should be prepared to replace the tranny very soon and yet again, tranny's on these cars fail at the cyclic rate.

My questions are-do any of you have tranny issues with your cars? If this is such an issue whyis thereno recall or TSB for this problem? With the exception of the tranny I'm veryhappy with the car. I'm just afraid that keeping a car that craps a tranny every 50k miles or so just isn't worth it- especially if the thing costs 2000 plus per plus install and that's for a reman not a new one.

Any input or suggestions are appreciated. If any of you have had similar problems how did you fix them? Is there an "upgrade" that I can doto keep the tranny alive?

Thanks in advance.

hmm trannys are pretty stable if looked after as are the breaks/pads/rotors they of course do ware but that's normal, I would think if the tranny had this sort of feed back there would be a recall and since there isn't one they must be ok

Tranny on 01 4.2 went at 85K. New trans was bought from Potomac (800-831-7686) for $2275 (including shipping) on 3/6/07 with a 6 month warranty. Put in a t local garage in SE PA for $900.

Unfortunately there are no used tranny's on this island. The closest reman shop I can find is in Nevada, prices appear to be pretty decent but shipping will be a few hundred. Labor rates on Oahu are usually in the 100-125 per hr range. So that3175 you spent in PA isabout 4500+ here. Hopefully the 700 dollars in parts and labor will fix the problem because spending 4500 on parts and labor for a remanned tranny is crazy IMO. I'll sell the car before I spend that kinda cash for something like that.

I can get a new Viper SpecT56 for my Mach1 for far cheaper than that.......I wonder if a T56 would fit in the Audi......hmmmm. Now that would be awesome!!! What kind of gears are in Audi's anyway?
