So it's been a while since i've checked out options for updating the trans map on my '02 A6, play with headlights and auto windows, etc. Are any of the scanners out there for a little over a hundred bucks equipped to access those menus, or does that still require the big dollar tools or the cheap cable and internet software

So you don't want the USB VAG cable? That's obviously the cheapest, easiest route (well i guess depending if you have a laptop).

I was hoping to find a separate handheld that might be more user friendly and have some additional bells/whistles. But I do have a laptop now so that's easier. What's the place to get the cable and software again?

It's only like $20 and well worth it. Even with the free version of the software, it lets you read just about everything. This includes every sensor on the vehicle: MAF, Oxygen, temperatures, speed, torque, rpm, etc. It's definitely worth the money.

Another cool function is that you can even graph RPM/Torque/Speed (although i think only one at a time in the free version), again, definitely worth it just for the sweet-factor. You can even go into the memory seat module and watch the numbers increase or decrease as you move your seat around.
