Default weird turn signals

my daughter reported to me that her 2000 A6 was making a "weird sound' under the dash in front of the driver when the turn signals were on. sure enough, when I tried it, she was right. Its sort of a grinding sound. I took it to a mechanic this morning and he, to his astonishment, verified it. he thinks its (I think he said) a relay switch. he explained the turn signals and the flashers are tied together and he thinks the switch or whatever which operates both is defective. he noticed that when the turn signals are on, you can put your finger on the flasher button and feel each time the turn signal blinks. since he has never seen this before, i fear he is mostly guessing (although he is totally honest)and if he is wrong, it can cost me some bucks. anybody ever hear of such a problem???

I would say he was right its the hazard flasher relay which I think on that car is built into the flasher button/hazard warning button

Same here. Very common problem. Just do a search for hazard switch and youll find out all the different sounds they can make.
