Do what tuners and hot-rodders have done for a hundred years..work the heads and valves..port and polish etc...add bigger, better exhausts with tuned headers..supercharge it, chip it etc etc etc. All of it spendy but so will any major engine mods even a 350 chev. The cheapest is the learn how to drive it fast..I've seen little VW's give much faster and more HP cars not only a run for the money but beat them on a road course. oh..you want downtown power?

Coming from a 2.7 owner - I'd suggest the 4.2 V8 if you want power. Sure, our 2.7's are beautiful machines and the twin turbos are great - but you run the risk of them blowing. In that case, you'll be forking out over $1500 for new turbos - and might as well upgrade to K04's. My turbos have 112k miles on them - absolutely no problems - but I'm looking at upgrading anyhow. Also, 2.7's IMHO seem to have a lot more idiotic problems than the 2.8, 3.0 or 4.2. I wish I had gone with the 4.2, honestly. Also, parts for the 2.7 are a real PITA and can be expensive as the 2.7 has a lot of parts that are only for itself - sometimes shares with the 4.2. (Example, front big brake kit - pads/rotors are much more expensive than say for your 3.0 as it takes 8 pads in the front, not 4). Just my input.
Now, on the flip side, I have an APR 93 octane performance chip which allows her up to 318 horses / 382 ft-lbs of torque. Coming from a twin-turboed V6 - who the hell can't love that! right?

What's so special about the 3.0 that the heads and headers can't be done which alone can add big HP... Borla and Milltech make Exhaust Kits for the 3.0L and if that isn't enough... you can Supercharge anything and they make a kit for that also (http://www.pes-tuning.com/default.aspx.
Just because most of the mod'er here do 2.7's which is because it was the only engine Audi had for awhile doesn't mean he can't mod that 3.0 without even considering a major engine change.
Here's a quote from a LA mod group:
"Audi A4 3.0L performance parts are harder to find. However, the power gains are quite noticeable and worth the effort. Borla claims up to a 35 hp gain with their performance catback exhaust kit...so we figured that if we estimated at least a 10 hp gain it would be reasonable, we got allot more then that and after the supercharger upgrade from PES Tuning's.... 320 hp!!"
I'd call that a sweet little mod and they never chipped it or had the heads done!
BTW, leave the 3.0 tags on so the 2.7 owners know who smoked'em
