Exclamation Whats up with the Trunk/Tail lights??

1997 A6 Quattro - I'm very curious.... I noticed that the red lights on the trunk never come on... Just the sides for running lights and brakes...

The only thing on the trunk that turns on is the reverse lights...

I looked the bulb but there is only a bulb for the red trunk lights on one side... The other side is molded plastic and closed off... both trunks I have are like this...

Do the red lights on anybody else's C4 A6 TRUNK come on??

Sounds like you're talking about the rear fog light.
Is it just to the side of the license plate area? If so it's a rear fog light.
On my 2001 A6 it's activated by pulling the headlight switch toward you 2 clicks when it's turned all the way to the right for headlights.
If that is indeed what you're talking about you don't want to drive around with it on all the time, it's very bright and very distracting to drivers behind you. It's a fog light so that's all it should be used for, very dense fog where you want to make sure people behind you are able to see that you're there.
I believe on US models there is only meant to be a bulb in one side, seems odd I know. If you really want a bulb in the other side too look around the forums, there are plenty of simple DIY writeups for those type things.

If that's not what you're referring to then kindly ignore the above text.

That sounds correct, I'll have to check it when I get up...

It just looks strange I guess with no running lights on the trunk on... Wanted to make sure everything was correct thanks.

On my 2003, both lights work. And, yes, only use it in fog, snow, heavy rain, or to scare off tailgaters.

I have heard that the single bulb rear fog light was done in NA so that it wouldn't be confused with the brake lights, but I've also heard of people being pulled over by cops thinking that they had a taillight or brake light out. European ones all have both lights, but they have the wider license plate, so the lights are above the plate rather than on either side.
