Default wrong GRADE GAAASSS!!!

ok so I use Premium (Supreme) gas from Exxon and nothing less in my 2001 A6 2.7t...but for some reason the guy at the Exxon gas station this morning was slightly mistaken when I said "Fill up PREMIUM" and he put regular in the car...I realized this when I looked at the reciept, but I didn't pay it any attention, I just figured I'd burn most of it quick, back and forth from work...

anyway, the car seemed to be working fine on the way to work, then as I'm driving home I feel the car losing the normal added kick (from the Turbos) that I usually get when I hit the gas, u know the feeling when u open it up on the highway? the Turbos throw u back into ur seat and holds u there (amazing)...

so yeah as I was saying I felt the power slowly fading, and about eh...15 minutes of normal driving I notice my "check engine light" on the dash glowing...so I'm freaked out now. I pull over and immediately reach for my Audi Manual. making sure all the warning lights were correct. after sitting there for awhile and reviewing it, everything seemed to be fine, but the check engine light was still glowing.

I drove the car all the way home, and figured the coolant needed to be topped off, I topped it off and also bought some "Fuel Injector Cleaner" from STP. decided if anything I could use that in the gas tank.

now this is where my mind got molested...I started the car and had it idling for awhile but the funny thing was after a few minutes I noticed that my turbos weren't warming up or dying down in the normal regular fashion, so to speak.

now could it be the regular gas that caused my turbos not to work? cause it seems like both are still intact...there was no puff of white smoke, nor oil spewn about the driveway.

I'm actually really freaked out rite now, and I know I'll lose sleep hardcore tonite cause of the problem. any input would be greatly appreciated guys. let me know if anyone experienced this before.

Regular gas should not cause any CEL to come on or any turbo problem. Just go buy a bottle of octane booster and pour it in your gas tank.

Your car is going to blow up and turbos are fried!! Just messing with you. Seriously, a single fill up with regular will not do any harm to your car. Modern cars have knock sensors and automatically adjusts timing to deal with these kinds of issues. It is unfortunate that the sequence of event happened this way, but the CEL is highly unlikely caused by the fill up.

Do you know what the code is?

Anyways, considering the gas attendant is stupid enough to fill the car with the wrong gas, perhaps he did not tighten the gas cap correctly? If so you will get a CEL. Just check the cap and see if the CEL goes out is a couple of days.

yeah I bought the STP Octane Booster this morning, and I added it to the gas tank, we'll see what happens in the next few hours, u think i should go service the Car at an authorized Audi dealership and then make the Exxon people pay for it? I mean it is their fault, I'll also check the Turbos Fuse and see what the deal is on that. thanks for the help guys.

Next time fill the tank yourself to prevent any "freaking out" situation, and other people from making "mistakes".

By the way, 89 octane in quite a few states is considered PREMIUM. Premium PLUS is the 91 octane... So the attendant wasn't stupid... But you can sue Exxon, since it is so easy to sue in this country out of the blue and for pretty much anything.

lmao @ "Mr. Sarcastic" over here...

first of all, it is illegal to pump your own gas in the state of NJ, second of all the gas attendent knew what grade he had to use because it wasn't the first time I used that gas station. and u bet I'll try to bring up a case against them. it'll defenitely make me sleep better at night.

Didn't most of us make it clear that there is like a 0.01% chance that the gas caused anything in your car.

As a lot of people asked: did you check your gas cap? It may have just been that. More than likely it's a coincidence than anything.

You need to realize that putting cheaper gas in your car isn't going to make it run terrible at all; it loses like 4 HP and isn't necessarily recommended over the life of your vehicle, but it will not do any damage especially for one tank. Stop blaming the gas, man. You came here for our opinion and if you aren't going to listen to it then why'd you even ask?

Never visited NJ, with its 1949 law ... now it makes some sense why it is the butt of many jokes.

IF you can provide the burden of proof that HE MUST KNOW what grade your car needs, then you might have a case... It takes quite a savant-like memory to remember the thousands of cars stopping there a few times, and their needs.

As said, in many states the different grades sold at the pump are as follows:
87 Octane - considered Regular
89 Octane - considered Premium
91 Octane - considered Premium Plus or Silver
93 Octane - Ultimate

I don't know what's the case in NJ - in particular for that gas station, but probably next time it may be less confusing if you shout "91 (93) octane, please".

By the way, I just pointed out to the reality in many other states regarding the gas grades.
The sarcasm was about a possible law suit, indeed.
