APR ECU Upgrade Worthwhile?

APR ECU Upgrade Worthwhile?
Hello Audi forums, I got rid of my Infinity M recently and purchased an A7. Originally I was looking at an S4 but ended up buying an A7 prestige because it had more of the features I was used to in my M. I know the S4, A6 and A7 all use the same engine but it's been tuned down in the A6 and A7. Since the engine can put out quiet a bit more HP and Torque, an ECU upgrade seemed like a good idea.
Here are my specific questions:
1. Are there any negative side effects to an ECU upgrade?
2. They seem really overpriced, at $1500 for an APR upgrade, I'm not sure its really worth it. I just do my daily driving in this care, if I put out for the upgrade, am I going to really notice any difference?
3. It sounded like with DirectPort, you could do the programming yourself with the proper cable. All I can find are dealers that do it for you, is this something you can purchase, upgrade yourself, and then unlock via APR? They eluded to this on their website, including a trial, but I couldn't find more information.
4. Are there any other, cheaper or better ECU upgrades I should consider?
Thanks for any help you can offer!

I have a 2008 TT. I got the APR ECU upgraded to stage 2 and I have noticed a difference in horse power and torque as well as better gas milage. Mine was only 800 plus install and when I upgraded to stage 2 they only charged for labor. I had to get it done in house by a certified apr dealer....
hope that helps
