Default 2000 a8l

Hello All.
New to the forum.I have a 2000 A8L with I guess releatively low miles.
106K Have replaced timing belt, thermostat, plugs and brakes.
Considering changing the transmission fluid although the dealers want $$$$
to do it because of the fluid costs.
What are other members experiences with high mileage 100-250K miles with the transmission as I plan on keeping this vehicle for some time.
As of now the transmission shifts smoothly.

I just finished a transmission filter/fluid change today on my 2000 A8 with 127,000 miles following this procedure: AUDIPAGES Tutorial

Notes:
I recently purchased the car and have been going through all of the deferred maintenance work that hadn't been done by previous owners. These efforts included replacement of all shocks and struts, flushing brake lines, the transmission filter/fluid change, Ross-tech VAG-com management and replacing the rusted exhaust joint sleeves. I mention this only in that I have limited 'previous behaviour' knowledge because I've only driven it several hundred miles.

I found two brackets impeding my removal of the transmission pan screws. Everything I'd read was warning me about cat-converters being in the way but there was no obstruction by them at all. It was the two horizontal brackets' removal [13mm and 16mm] that allowed for success.

Tracking down a 17mm allen wrench was an effort, so was breaking free the "fill plug". The "drain plug" immediately stripped out on me, so I was left to drain via the fill plug and drop the pan with a LOT of fluid sloshing inside. I should have used my pump to drain it...

I don't believe the ATF had ever been changed (a guess along with one seized bolt) and I was concerned about what I would find when the pan dropped.

Sludge on the magnets, no metal. Light sludging on pan. Very dark and dirty fluid. A messy process all in all.

New o-ring, filter, gasket, and 7 quarts of Pentosin ATF later, the A8 was zipping about with improved shifting as well as smoother sound and feel.

I recommend doing it if you can raise and keep the car level on 4 points safely while you work and someone can run the engine and shift.

The peace of mind is what I needed. The bonus performance and smoothness is fantastic.
