Default Adaptive Light Defective message

I'm getting an "Adaptive Light Defective" message on the driver information screen when the headlights are on. Cycle the ignition off/on it goes away. I'd say it's sporadic but it shows up pretty much every time the headlights are on...it seems to only show up after driving slowly, like through a parking lot.

VAG-COM scan gives this:

Looking at the Bentley manual, it says the v318 motor cannot be replaced by itself and that the headlamp assembly must be replaced. Seriously? Why would the diagnostic info tell me exactly what needs to be replaced if I can't replace just that...it should tell me to replace the assembly.

Has anyone had this issue? Anyone know a part number for the specific motor and if I can buy it? I don't mind doing 'surgery' to fix it but I'm at a loss and don't want to shell out $1,000 for a headlight.

Thanks

get the headlight to proper alignment, and pull the fuse. on my a6 its fuse 10. that will eliminate the faulty headlight error. it will also disable the feature but who needs it.

I have this exact problem. I just took the part number you provided and looked it up on an Audi Part website and parts do show up for it. Did you ever get it fixed? Would just getting that part fix my 'Adaptive light Defect'?

I just turned the car on and off. It shows up every 6 months or so, but it goes away.

Hey...I got rid of my A8, picked up a new E350 and love it. I took the ballast off of the left light (had to take the wheel well liner out) and the insulation on the wires inside was cracked and missing...what was happening is when I went around a right hand turn and the lights turned right, the bare wires would touch and trigger the Adaptive Light Defective message. Turning car off and on resolved it but putting some electrical tape on the wires fixed it permanently. I traded it in shortly afterward but am confident it would have held up for some time.

Hope this helps...

Unfortunately I need to keep this car for 2 more years as I will be a freshman in college this fall. But I was looking around and found headlights for the 09-11 A6 with the LEDs. Could those possible work on my 2006 A6?

A6 C6 (typ F; 4F chassis) with AFS HID by Hella. I have re-soldered the thin black wires that go to the turning mechanism but they break again. The shielding of the wires (all of them) inside the headlight is crumbling.
I cannot find a replacement harness. It's probably possible to re-wire it myself but I have to bake open the headlight.
There is a document online called: Light is Technology Hella.pdf that you can read up on. Generation 4 is what's on my car.
I have taken the two fuses for control units of left and right headlights but the ECU still reads them defective. I might disconnect battery to see if that would "fix" it.
VAG-COM coding might be an option too.

What kind of VAG do you have that gives you that detail? I need to buy one anyway, so might as well get one that is high end and provides detail like that.
