Buying a used A8 1997 model - bad idea?
Hi,
I'm contemplating purchasing a 1997 Audi A8 4.2 quattro as a 3rd car. Something to drive once a week or so around the Chicagoland area.
While I'm somewhat technical (develop software, can install light switches :-) ) I have never actually fixed a car, other than changed a tire. :-)
The car has 94k miles and seems in good shape.
Is this a bad idea? I don't mind spending a few hundred $ every few months to keep it in shape, but I'm concerned a car like this will be expensive to fix when brought to the dealer. I'm definitely not looking to spend $2000 or more a year on repairs.
Is this a bad idea? Any suggestions?
Thank you!

I just picked up a 1998 A8 with 180k, loaded, no rust or dents, great all around, new brakes and rotors all around and new suspension parts, for $2500. Plan on doing a full timing/water pump immediately...Man I love this car. So solid, safe, quiet, fast, it's just a cool sedan. For $3500, think of a new $40k car...for me, why not put a few thousand into a great sedan like this...way more efficient money-wise, low insurance, quattro rocks in the snow...it's a no brainer to me...
If you have lots of cash to burn, you may decide alternately, but I love this car.
