Is it possible to fit D3 wheels to a D2 (1998 a8) ?

As long as the fitment matches why not.

The offset may be different depending on the wheel, but any modern Audi wheel 15'' or 16'' with 5x112 bolt pattern will fit.

...OR 17, 18 or 19" D3 wheels. All have same center bore (57.1) and correct offset.

15" might not clear the brakes...16" was smallest wheel on D2's.

Most any 16-19" wheel up to 8.5" wide (some 20's) with 57.1 center bore, 5x112 pattern and offset from 30-48mm will fit with correct OEM size tire for D2 or D3.

Sweet, TY for the info. I was looking more in the range of 20", anyone have a tire size I should stick with for a D3 20" wheel on a 98 a8?

First, it's debatable whether 20's would clear fenders and full steering turn on front wheels, because they're 9" wide....might work...I really don't know for sure.

Audi offered em on '07 models on and put 275/35/20 on em...BUT, that would be almost a full inch taller (27.6") than D2's standard diameter of 26.7". Car would stand 1/2" taller, wrong speedo reading and a loss in take off torque. 275/30/20 would give you close to correct diameter...a hair shorter (1/5") than 18" with 245/45/18 or 17" with 225/55/17.
IF you do go with 20's and wanted a perfect diameter, 285/30/20 (but wider than I would want) would be exactly 26.7"....or even a 255/35/20 (27") ...or 245/35/20 (26.8") but don't know it would stretch properly on a 9" rim (I've heard of even narrower being stretched that far) ....just don't know if they'd work on a D2(?)

Audi put 255/40/19 on D3 19" wheels, which is 1/3" taller (27") than normal D2 diameter....very slight speedo change and very slight take off torque difference.

***245/40/19 would be exactly 26.7" and the difference in traction would be negligible in an AWD...plus the 'stretch' would slightly stiffen the sidewalls for a hair crisper steering reaction. Personally, that's what I'd put on 19's.

***This has been a subject of great debate, esp among people who believe that "wider is better", no matter what. Wider can yield more forward & braking traction (if needed) and a slightly softer ride.
I, and a lot of road racer purists, have the view that the narrowest tire on a given rim yields the quickest handling, with only an unnoticeable loss in forward & braking traction. BUT, I live in the mountains and drive mostly tight narrow roads. SO, these differences are only a matter of opinion and personal preference.

Definately an area of great debate, wider is NOT always better, in fact on a car with AWD and stock like horsepower the thinest tire you can fit on there will yield much better handling. RACECARS have really wide tires because they are going thru corners and great speed and need all traction they can get, especially under braking.
On your car i wouldn't go wider than 245 to 255, 245 probably being the best for overall handling of the A8. Size of the wheel will sacrafice speed off the line, but not a major difference, and 20's will work fine on a D2 as long as they aren't too wide to rub on the body. The speedo would only be off about 1-2 mph max, which is negligible, to me at least. It really depends on what you want, 20's would look a bit better to me, as long as they aren't DONK wheels. Keep it classy.
