Ive replace a couple wiper motors with control modulefor problems similar to yours. [...] Sounds like you may have just taken it to the wrong dealers [...] As described earlier, a switch, three control modules, and a motor are all required to make your wipers turn on. Truth in engineering.
I'd be interested to hear how many is "a couple" for you. I know there are at least 8 people who have publicly posted the same issues on Audiworld. I'm hoping to set up www.wiperdance.com to get some attention from Audi on this issue. That's 8 folks who posted publicly, which is only a small percentage of Audi owners. Say the real number is 40-50 2004 owners who had the same issue. That's 1% of Audi's 2004 A8 sales(!!).

As for "truth in engineering" -- my favorite statement in regards to the A8L was made by the service manager when I picked up the car after routine maintenance: "And oh, by the way, we upgraded the software for your parking brake..."

There's nothing wrong with using the amount of hardware they do to make things go, even wipers. There IS a problem when they are unable to properly maintain this hardware, or are unwilling to pursue a ligitimate customer complaint, especially when it regards essential safety equipment of the vehicle. What if my brakes had failed due to their ABS software "taking a dump"?

^^^^^^In conjunction with what he just said, i would estimate that 70% of audi techs accross the US doesn't know what they are doing. Trust me i've gone to school with a lot of these guys, they aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, but that goes for other high end dealers.
I could have found out the problem to your car quite easily as dankhound could have as well.
The dealer where I purchased the car (and took it to twice for the wiper issues) has a resident German Audi tech. I actually chatted a few times with the fellow in our native German. This guy knows what he's talking about, knows Audis inside and out. He reprogrammed my A6's "self-adjusting" transmission a few times to make it more sporty.

to be serious ( when was the last time you serviced the wiper motor? ) its not in the service manual even at the dealership they use the "wait till it fails excuses" and try to get out of fixing it with the old were and tear line

Sucks for you, there almost are no problems with the wiper systems in the A8, so i think you got a bad apple or a "lemon" you might say.

Well if audi isn't your cup of tea, i hope you have better luck with BMW or crap *** Mercedes...[:'(]
Dang, you're clueless.

1. You say there are "almost [...] no problems with the wiper systems in the A8". If you had half a clue, you'd understand that there should be NO problems AT ALL. Wipers are a major piece of safety equipment, like headlights, brakes and steering. If they fail in bad weather (as mine did), you're SOL and driving blind.

You are also wrong. The wiper-motor problems are well known in the AudiWorld community, and presumably to Audi NA as well, because a number of people were able to "convince" their dealers to replace the motor... and their problems were solved.

Now thats not very nice. Just because there are a few cars on audiworld with this problemdoesn't make it widely known across the world. All parts (even wiper motors) can have faulty parts, but its not a huge issue with audi or they would have a world wide TSB for it.
I love audi's personally and i hope you can find a dealer that treats you better, i was lucky enough to learn most of my stuff from an old school German engineer. So i think i might have a clue. I've also worked on Mercedes and BMW, and i can tell you i would drive a Bimmer over a Benz any day.
