Default HELP! What is this part?

2004 A8L 136k miles
I started noticing a humming noise coming from my engine and narrowed the noise down to this piece. Has anyone experienced this before? Or can someone please tell me what part this is, how much it might cost, and will it be easy enough for me to replace myself? (I'm not too mechanically inclined, but I'm not a dummy either)

BTW, there is usually a plastic cover that is over this whole area.

Thanks!
