I've just purchased a 1998 A8 with the 4.2V8 and quattro, I have to some some front end on work on it so I thought with the front end off I might as well do some other regular PM work, the timing belt and water pump are the first things that come to mind, the car has 268000km's on it is there a list of parts that I could bring into the parts store so I can't have everything ready to go at the time I dismantle it?, Much thanks. if there is anything else I should be doing please inform me if you could, I'm new to these audi V8's., I've had a few VW's a Volvo's Mazda's( one honda, but only for 6 months:P), but as I say these V8's are new to me.

 

Change all your vaccum lines, and rubber crankcase hoses on the front and back of the engine because those are known to fail on older 4.2L engines. The crankcase hoses im talking about are the two in front and the single one in back, give em a squeze and you'll see what im talking about.

 

Hey thank yoiu, and will do, one question though, I've noticed a couple of parts for the 4.2 when looking under timeing parts, a timing belt and chain, what are the intervals for changing the chain that couples the cams?
