I have a 96, A8 3.7 V8. Love the car, one thing when i turn the ignition key I have to wait for the orange key light on the dash to go out before I crank the engine. Sometimes this can take three attempts, otherwise if I crank the engine it will start but immediately cut out. Is there a code or a reset device I can introduce to illiminate this problem?

Two possible issue:
1- Have you changed the battery recently in the remote ? Mine gets fussy when it's low.
2- Are there any other 'smart' keys or access badges on your keychain ? They can obfuscate the signal from the Audi key.

Hi, I did change the battery in the remote recently but it was from the village shop so I have no exact date on the batteries manufacture. Could have been on the shelf for a long time. The other possibility is out of the question, the only key on my car key fob is the car key only.
I will persue this matter further with a date identified battery.
Thanks for your input on this matter.
Philip.

Hopefully the battery will fix it.
Not sure about where you are, but here in the States many car part stores have a kiosk where you are able to test your keys/fobs.
You place it next to the tester and press a button - if it lights up the key is transmitting RF signal.
May be worth a try if there is one nearby.

Jake
