Great forum, lots of good info here. I searched, but couldn't find anything, so I'll make my first post. My 97 A8 just started making a strange noise. When my foot is off the gas I hear a slight noise that sounds like something spinning (like the sound a pinwheel would make if it was hitting something?). As soon as I touch the gas pedal the noise stops. If I'm going faster the noise is different than when I'm going slower. When I'm stopped there is no noise. I think it's coming from the passanger side front end? Any ideas or experience? Thanks.

 

I hope you can understand what I'm asking: Can you "feel" the noise, too? In teh steering wheel? Or, the gas pedal? Or even teh seat of yoru pants?

 

when stopped at idle speedpress the clutch peddle if the noise goes off its the thrust bearing,it dosnt sound bad enough to me that you need to replace it yet

 

While we're on teh topic of strange noises, MY Baby just started making this wierd metallic whisteling sound, last night. I'm not sure if it's a belt slipping, mostly because teh whisteling sound does NOT apear to be related to engine speed at all. After pointing my non-calibrated ear (the right one, in case you're wondering) at the front of teh engine compartment (where teh noise was coming from), I've determined that it's comeing from either teh power-steering pump (right-front corner, as you're looking at the engine), or possibly the water pump. But, again, the noise does NOT appear to be engine-speed dependant.

I'm flummoxed!

Planned on having teh t/b & w/p, et-al along with new accessory belts, of course, done around mid-month, so maybe it'll go away when I get all that done.

Just oputta curiousity, what DOES a p/s pump sound like when it starts to go bad?

 

I can't feel it at all. Nothing in the seat, steering wheel, or pedals. It's a automatic also.
