Default Q7 electrical issues

Hi, Thanks for reading my big story

I bought a 2007 Q7 about 6 months ago. Since the warranty was expiring soon, I checked it out at the dealer and he said that there was absolutely no problem with it. Then I bought an after market warranty. I am in Colorado where we had a few really cold nights in the last couple months. Problems started last month.

- Sometimes the hatch would not close unless I opened one of the front doors.
- Few days later, the MMI went blank(It would turn on, but off after couple seconds).
- Few days later the battery went dead and needed a jump start.

As the dealer suggested I replaced the battery, but after a week it went dead again. Then the dealer did a thorough diagnosis(2 hours @ $115/hr. sigh) and said the fibre optic loop was broken due to the amplifier. The estimate he gives me is $1500 ($900 for the bose amplifier). Now the warranty company is saying that amplifier is not covered.

How hard is it for me to replace the amplifier myself and how much would it cost? Is there anything else I can do besides spending $1.5K? I am not trusting the dealer's diagnosis because initially he said the battery was wrong, then said phone module, then said he would close the loop by using a repeater since i didnt need the expensive phone module, then said bad amplifier.

I am looking for ideas from you all. Please chip in. Appreciate all your help.

Hi... I assumed you already solved the problem due to the date, but this seems to be a common problem with those Bose amps.. My Q7 is in the shop as we speak and this is the 2nd time they had to change the Amp. First time the MMI went dead... it took them 2 days to get the AMP... Last monday, more than a week ago and after multiple jump starts, I dropped it in the AUDI dealer for them to fix the problem... Friday last week they found the problem and ordered the amp and should deliver the car today... The amp is a plug and play unit.. I've actually taken it apart, but not sure if they need to re-set it in the computer for it to work... that might be the key to having to bring it in for repair!!

The dealer did guesswork troubleshooting repairs on your dime. I'd insist that they replace the amp at cost with no labor charge.

Frisco, Thanks for the update. I am trying to get the amp from salvage parts since my car is out of warranty. Where is the amp located? Can you give me steps to replace the amp? Thanks in advance!

***All issues resolved*** MMI, music, etc working as normal. Spent $200 for the amp from a salvage yard that I found online. Spent $10 on Elsawin software that has repair manual. Spent couple hours to replace the amp. As soon as I put the key in ignition, MMI display and sound started working. However, right side speakers didn't produce any sound. Took it to the dealer and had them perform component protection crap for $115. Thats it. Enjoying the lovely car!!

Hi, can you please offer us some specifics on the part's name, the website you purchased it, and this CD from Eslawin?

Thanks!

hi kmjunk and FriscoM. i may be having a similar issue with my '07 A6. i'm guessing they were fitting the same Bose amplifiers on both your Q7 and my A6 that year.

when i start my car and turn on the stereo, after a few seconds the sound cuts out for a few seconds, and then turns on again for a few seconds. the sound will then continue cycling on and off. sometimes, the MMI display cuts out and dims as well.

1. does this sound familiar?
2. how were you able to figure out that it is the amplifier that needs to be replaced?
3. is that all i may need to replace?

i looked up the amp in a part catalog and identified the part number as 5035223 but there is an A version for a PR-8RY sedan and a B version for a J sedan.

4. does anyone know what these two versions refer to?

here's the part diagram:

Chut,

My car's behavior was different, hence guessing that your problem could be different. In my case, the dealer identified that the problem was with the amp. To confirm that he is right, I removed the amplifier fuse and made sure that the battery drain stopped.

Not sure about the versions.

Hi kmjunk, I am happy that you resolved your problems. I now have the same problem and nobody seems to answer the question "Where is the amplifier located and how do you get to it?". So, it would be a tremendous help if you could help me locate the amplifier. I have found online a replacement called "Car MOST Amplifier Interface for Audi MMI (BOS-MI009)". This item is going online for approximately $399. Looking forward to a quick response.

The amplifier is inside the trunk/boot, on the left side.

You can remove it using an allen wrench.
