Default 01 Audi TT Quattro cooling fan driving me nuts!!

Greetings,

2001 Audi TT Quattro (180). Runs hot when idling for a period of time and even when driving after awhile.

History:
Bought the car back in Dec of last year. Noticed that the Power Bank (or whatever you want to call that thing on top of the battery with the fuses in it) had a fuse area melted and someone hodge-podged a fuseable link inline. Noticed that it was for the fan control. (Yes, full on coolant and burped system)

I:
1) replaced the power bank with a new one (verified that the fuses in the power bank were good)
2) checked fuse #16 in the cabin (fan control) not blown -changed it anyway with no change
3) put new fan relay control (the thing underneath the battery) No change
4) changed both primary and secondary fans

The High fan still NEVER comes on (even at 230F+)
.
Low fan speed only occurs when A/C is on and if it is hot 190F+ the low fan will shut off even if the A/C is on.

I am pulling my hear out trying to figure this out. The only other thing that I have not tried, but read about, is a sensor in the bottom of the radiator that is a combo sensor that sends one reading to the instrument cluster and the other one to the ECU.

Can anyone else think of anything that it may be. I am getting tired of throwing money at it.

Thanks in advance,

Dom

I ordered a new Thermo Fan switch (3 prong) that goes in the bottom driver's side of the rad. It comes in on Tuesday. We will see if this rectifies the problem. I have replaced everything else that I can think of. Feel free to chime in.

Changed the Thermo Fan switch with no change. I can't believe that weeks have passed and not even one reply. Sad. I am just going to hardwire the fan to a fuse that gets 12V when ignition is on for now.

Hi Dom,

I have had a lot of trouble with my fan control too. My battery fusebox was also melted and I bought a new one, I replaced the control module and ended replacing both fan, but it did not solve the problem.

At the same time I had issues with the Dashboard. Warning lights going on for no reason et c. I eventually sent it for repair and that did not only solve those problems but tah dah. That fans now worked perfectly. I’m not saying that’s the solution to your issues but maybe.

Do you know what they replaced when you took it in?

This is the repairlist I got from them:
- fuel pointer motor replaced (faulty)
- temp pointer motor replaced (faulty chinese counterfeit)
- fuel and temp sensing circuit repaired (faulty)
- pointer motors power circuit repaired (physically damaged by previous 'repairer')

The faulty chinese counterfeit one, I had instaled myself a mounth earlier, unaware that it was counterfeit of course
