Default audi timing belt question

hey guys, I got a 2000 TT , and first thing I did when I got it home was took the timing cover off and looked at the belt with my father who is a mechanic(but doesn't know too much about audi's). He checked the ribs on the belts and said they looked fine and the belt was shiney and smooth on the outside. The engine bay is extremely well taken care of so I'm lead to believe that the car was dealership changed at the due date, although I have no proof of this from the previous owner.

Should I change the belt or? My father thinks its fine and wouldn't need a change, but im still super worried! everything else is fine and the car is a freggin awesome car! Its the 2000 with the performance package so i have the 17s and Xenon HIDs.

Also, the guage cluster information gauge has lines running thru it, is this a common problem with the audis clusters?

the lines are common, look at the timming belt and see if there is writing on it and check for cracks. how many miles are on it and just because the engine bay is clean doesn't mean it had been done, if there isn't any writing on the belt or if it worries you change it. i take it there isn't any service records.

there wasn't any writing on the 4 inches of it that we could see, but there is no cracks at all infact it still looks polished and super clean. theres 88k on the car , I have the owners manual with some service records but haven't looked through all of them yet so i will tonight. If there isn't any cracks and the ribs are fine, should I change it ?

looks can be deceiving " if in doubt change it ", glazed outer and no writing visible is a sure sign it has been replaced in a while

take it from me clean engine bay doesnt mean squat!!! also my timing belt didnt have any cracks in it at all it looked like it had less than 10k miles on it.... but this is what happened
BTW my car had 87k when this happened!!
i was in 1st gear letting the clutch out giving it some gas and my car died took it to shop belt was loose and had no compression in the cylinders
long story short somthing stripped about ten teeth of the belt so the 8 exhaust valves bent and 1 intake valve had marks on it. 5500 for audi to do this but i had dealer who i bought it from hook me up for around 1600 (600 parts) and 1000 labor. new water pump, tensior, pully, gaskets, radiator fluid, etc so hurry up and do the timing belt kit from dieselgeek.com 270 bucks shipped! it will save u in the end!!! hope this helps someone.
