AWD or 4wheel drive

AWD or 4wheel drive
So this is a dumb question but here it goes. The Audi TT has All Wheel Drive (AWD) is that the same as Four wheel drive? Is there a technicality that actually separates these 2 or are they exactly the same just called something different. Personally I'd like to state I think they are the same thing, but i'm sure someone with more experience might know if there is actually a slight difference in the way they work or something.

RE: AWD or 4wheel drive
The TT Quattro is AWD, the stock Haldex controller sends 80% torque to front, 20% to rear wheels when slip is sensed. An A4 Quattro is a "more true" AWD system with more or less equal torque to front and rear. Not the same as 4WD which are generally rear wheel drive with a transfer case that sends power to the front.

RE: AWD or 4wheel drive
Main points are:
4wd is usually a driver selectable mode. (Old jeeps are RWD or 4wd selectable by a lever in the cabin)
Awd not selectable, but the car senses when to transfer power to the other wheels.
