To Buy or Not to Buy..??
New to the forum. Ever since I first laid eyes on this car when it first came out I have lusted after it. Now the oppourtunity has arose that I may be able to finally have one. Anytime I have mentioned Audi to people the first thing they say: "those cars spend alot of time in the shop."
Is this true for the most part?? What is the reality of these awesome little cars?? Common problems?? I'm looking to purchase a 2000 or 2001 coupe. Are there any other cars to compare them too?? Would love to know what I am getting myself into. Thanks, Cliff

1. Timing belt, tensioner and water pump need to be done at 60K interval. $700-$800 at independent shop.
2. Instrument clusters have been problematic... some can be rebuilt for $250 otherwise new is $1000. It's hit and miss, I haven't had any trouble with my 2000.
3. Coilpacks fail due to high temp.. $25 each and can DIY in less than 10 minutes.
4. Haldex service (fluid and filter) every 20K, DIY job for under $50 once you have the wrench.
Other than that, just normal maintenance at 5K and 10K intervals. A lot of us are into the DIY scene so the work required to keep these cars running is part of the fun. The 1.8T engine is very good (except for the TB above) but the mechanics otherwise are sound and can be pushed to over 300 HP with bolt on parts (Turbo, etc.)
As far as Z3 vs the TT goes, it depends whats important to you. No doubt the z3 is going to be a fun car, and at least from a rolling start and not rhough tight turns, is faster than an unmodded TT. If you are looking at a quattro TT vs a z3, I would def go for the TT w/ quattro. If performance matters to you, go for an 01 or later so you can get the 225 hp vs the 180hp version. Unless you live in the salt flats or something, I would think having the AWD and ESP and lot nicer fit and finish would seal the deal. Also, look at the warranties, I dont think, though am not positive, Z3 is warrantied against ust and corrosion anywhere as long as the TT, if you are going to drop the money, I would suggest getting the TT. The repairs/maintenance will cost a little more probabally, but the price of owning that car over time should be close if not better since it is of better qulaity and probally better reasale. The TT's (I hear) are very friendly to modification, and in my opinion, are just a nicer car in pretty much every aspect except straightline speed.
