Lightbulb Call me crazy..

..and maybe it's my complete noobness here but, the more I read, the more relays click in my head . Say, for instance, I were wanting to obtain a cold air intake for my car. Now, I can search and find traces of not much at all..end up trying to custom fab something up because I'm a cheap @$$ who doesn't want to spend $300 for the name INJEN. Twelve cuts/burns and a few cuss words later, I'm finally done with something that looks like "Bubba's Super Horsepower mod". It occured to me that the 1.8t fwd motor that is in my TT has been used in other cars as well, more specifically VWs (Golfs/Jettas/Passats). Now assuming that Audi/VW wanted to keep a limited amount of production parts for all cars using this motor (to keep their own production costs down), would I be incorrect to say that a Cold Air intake (with possible slight modifications) from a 1.8t golf of the same manufacturing year may work just as well? If this is not the case as far as parts go, please let me know and I will go back to my shameful noob life of silence..

Even just a good cone with a nice elbow off of ebay will do just fine, others have done the same. I bought the P-Flo for $250 out of sheer laziness. lol

Some parts are interchangeable however the cold air intake is an after market product manufactured by someone other than Audi/VW. It's not a production part. Some of what you are paying for is the R&D that went into the manufacture of the part.

Roger that, I have plenty of respect for genius minds that have invented through means of R&D. Without it, we wouldn't have 90% of the technilogically (<--my random vocab?) advanced products that make our everyday lives easier and easier. I guess because I know that later down the road when the wallet is a little more full, I am going to do more serious modifications, I wanted to spare a few $$ early on. I've had the car a few days and have already got a few parts on the way. As far as exhaust, I'm taking that alot of people just do a custom 3 inch job eliminating anything restrictive and placing say a Borla (or something else) universal in-line and a nice looking tip? One of the parts on the way is a catless 3in DP. I'm also seeing a lot of custom fab intercooler kits. I'm all about some R&D (without my paycheck would be non-existant) just trying to place things together in my cluttered mind. Thanks for the quick replies.

The catless 3" DP will be amazing when you install it. I made the mistake of buying the Borla catback kit. Which is a very nice kit, looks awesome, bolts up awesome, and sounds awesome. BUT was too expensive for what it is, and came resonated! Just bolt the catless 3" DP up, and get custom 3" back exhaust bent up at an exhaust shop, with a high muffler with dual outlet at the back. Will be a sick sounding install! But, my exhaust is also. lol

Agreed. I honestly don't see a point in spending $300 on an intake, especially when it's going on a turbo application. It's honestly not going to do too much for you except give you more sound.

As a somewhat sad comparison, I have this sound saved in my mind of my friends AWD 1st Gen Eclipse with catless 3in DP and custom 3in exhaust and if it sounds anything like that.... sheer bliss to the inner ear...lol. I'll probably order some mandrel bends (not that I should need many) and fab it up myself. Since I only have a single outlet, how would I go about making it a dual without cutting the bumper? Probably should just leave it single outlet..
