Can 89 octane throw CEL?
I got my TT about 2 weeks ago and filled it with 89 octane the other day. About 80 miles later, my CEL came on. Is it possible this is due to the low octane or do I need to go back to the dealership and give my salesman a WTF??
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

UMMM you did see the 91 octane min on the fuel door? Your are getting a cel from the gas and it is pulling timing and maybe even some boost to perserve the engine. Fill up with 93 and run it for awhile and then fill up again. you need to get the balance back to 91 or above asap. Youll need to reset the ecu after you get things back in chack also.
Yeah I saw it - my 01 Jetta VR6 said the same thing but I ran 89 once in a while because most of the shops around here don't have higher octane, it would never throw CEL though...guess it's time to put some octane boost in that beast! Thanks for the info!
You should do as Cincy said. Octane Boost or the other additives like 104+ don't really inprove your octane rating all that much. Maybe by 0.4 or so per bottle. Get some high octane gas in there or make your own.
Actually here is a good link for you:

Thanks for all the replys.
I put some octane boost/fuel cleaner in it until I can get it to a gas station with higher octane later today, might put some 95 or 103 in it to bring it back to life...

Why the fuuuuuck would you put E85 OR 89 in your car. - If for nothing but respect of the rings.
this is a sad thread, I hope you take better care of her in the future and realize this little baby isn't a honda

e85 is a very high octane gas, the only problem is that it takes ~2x as much as regualar gas to run stoch. Your ecu will adjust, but you will run out of injectors if you dont have oversized injectors. Actually if you put in about a 1/4 tank of e85 you should be up in the high 90's in octane. Take about increase the timing!
BMWtoAudi,
This wasn't a sad thread until you started making inappropriate remarks about a simple question. Grow up. If you read my original post, I needed gas, and it's hard to find anything above 89 where I live, so I had to get it. Like I said, my Jetta said the same thing, so I thought it might be alright to use it to get me by. Also, I don't know why you are reffering to Hondas, the only cars I have talked about owning are a Volkswagen and an Audi. I asked a simple question, and I got the response I was looking for from respectable members of the forum. If you want to be one of those members, I would suggest that you rethink future comments such as the one previously posted, as it was rude, inappropriate, and uncalled for.
Once again, thank you to all who provided useful information. That's what forums like these are for.

I know she'd love some 95!
