Can 89 octane throw CEL?
Justin,
You really need more than just a bottle of Octane booster. If you had about 10 gallons of 89 octane fuel and you added one bottle of the booster your new rating would be about 89.3 octane. Not even close to the 91 octane rating you need. Anyway, hope you don't have any long term issues and that you are able to get the fuel you need more readily that you have been.
Btw, that site has some info on what you canadd to adjust your rating higher. You might want to check into e85 as well if Cincy's info is correct (Iwant to do a little research into it before I just blindly agree with him although he is usually correct.)

Ran down to the station today and got 2 gal. of 100 octane ($6 a pop!) and filled the rest with 91. With about half a tank of 89, this mix should put me at roughly 92 oct. min. I'm resetting the comp now, so she should be good to go after that, hopefully.
ouTTie914 - There's one place here in Lincoln, NE that sells street-legal 100 oct...cash only, literaly! Haha!

I think putting 89 octane gas in your car is abuse. - I work in a small town that only carry's 89 octane gas. - I always make sure I have enough gas to get home because I wont put it in my car.
Sorry man, but you know you have a high end car, you need to be prepared for things like that to happen.
Also, for having 14 points your pretty darn jumpy! - I was giving you ****.

The 100 octane you have leaded? Most are.
Sometimes around a lake or marina area you can pick up some higher octane unleaded fuels... most of the time not street legal and many places will not let you pump into a car you drive in. Just my experience.
The higher the octane the more it pollutes. Thats why they make sure people driving normal N/A cars use 87 or whatever you have, and point out you dont gain anything by increasing it.
Yeah, I was curious as to the actual octane rating of the E85. I knew that it was approximately 85% ethonol and 15% gasoline which should give it a high octane rating. I just wasn't sure if there were any other additives added to lower it further. Appears that E85 ranges between a 100-105 octane rating.
Let us know if higher octane does in fact clear the CEL. I've run 89 for about 3 months since I bought the car without any problems whatsoever. My understanding is 91 will give you max performance but 89 won't actually hurt, just less potential performance because if pinging is sensed timing will be retarded. Anybody know different for a fact (not speculation)?

Like I said, afer about 80 miles on 89 my CEL came on. I got the octane back up and reset the ecu and havent had problems since. I did see a noticable loss in performance, particularly in acceleration, which came back after resetting the ecu. Also, the turbo was not near as loud, which may suggest a fault in timing in order to compensate for the lower octane. Regardless, I now know that running anything lower than 91 octane should only be used in extreme siuations, as it will likely retard timing and make for one unsatisfied TT driver...
