Default Differential Problem

I think I may have a differential problem...I was driving the other day and when I shifted from 1st to 2nd my 2001 TT Quattro with 43,000 miles lost all power to the wheels...The clutch still has pressure...I had it brought to an independant Audi/VW shop and they told me that the I lost fluid in the "rear clutch assembly" and that now my rear differential is done for and it will cost me around $3000 to fix...Is this normal or am I being taken advantage of?

I would take it to an independant shop and get a second opinion.

Can you get an independent Warranty?
Even if they run 2k you will still save some bucks
