Default figure this one out

So I had to get a new stater..6 speed quattro, you guys know the spec's. So my father takes the starter out and goes to order a new one for a 6 speed 1.8q 2001. The stater comes in and my dad and I pre fitted it and nothing is lining up so he takes it back to the parts store goes to a warehouse to get another one. Brings it home fits it and nothing lines up on the block, again, mind you he did order the 6 speed manual gear box starter. So doing he checked the part number on the starter and looks it up. turns out it is a starter from a audi tt automatic. transmission totally different from a 6 speed manual tranny, how is this possible? dose anyone know why an automatic starter would turn the crank on a 6 speed? if you look at a 6 speed trany stater and a auto they are totally different? By the way this is the original starter that came with the car!!! Any suggestions anyone.....

I think all TT automatic trannys are 5 speed, that would be your answer If im correct and I believe the Audi 225hp Quattros are all 6 speed, so they are not the same.... Someone else correct me if im wrong here....

You are......
The starter on a manual transmission mates with a flywheel. Automatic transmissions have no flywheel so in most cases, the starter lines up completely different.

You need the one for an 02M. If they cant get the correct one for your car, tell them you have a VW GLI with a 6sp

Thanks Cincy. DO you think this is something that they changed on the production line. I mean how the heck can I have an automatic stater on my car? NONE of the manual starters are fitting. I'am waiting on a new one that should be here by tomorrow so we will see if not ill try what you suggested.

Nothing has changed. There is a auto, 02J (fwd 5sp), and 02M (AWD TT models and 6sp VW models). Most times you get a 02J starter when you need a 02M.
