I'm considering a 2002 for my son's first car, but I need to know if they are any good in snow.

Also, the one I'm looking at will need tires. Suggestions would be appreciated also. Brands, types etc.

 

my fwd tt on all seasons plowed thru foot high snow plow banks when i got plowed in at work, and with my blizzacks on i was passing stuck 4x4 pickups with the owners looking at me amazed lol so yes in my experiance theyre good in the snow with all seasons and awesome with good snow tires but i drive with my ESC off and know how to rock a car thru snow and i have good throttle control so if u give ur son some pointers he'll be fine, plus what kid doesnt want an audi as his first car

 

i suggest buying a cheap set or rims with snow tires for snow season.

a FWD TT is basicly a nice looking VW golf. VW/Audi FWD system though are very well engineered system in terms of safety and control.

The AWD TT is actually even more safer setup as its FWD until slip is detected then the rear wheel tires are given power.

 

I dont know your price relatively, but a set of all season hancooks V12s on the alloy rims. and a pair of snowtires of your own choice on some cheap rims would be most suitable for the job

 

Just a couple things to consider about a TT (FWD or AWD) as your son's first car... it's a two seater sports car, like a Miata or Honda S2000, and other little cars little cars like that. So, chances of him quickly developing a lead foot are pretty high. Also, the insurance premiums for a kid (I assume still in high school) with a sports car are probably going to be pretty steep.

the coupe tt actually sell as a coupe and not a sportscar on insurance. the convertible is recognized as a roadster. my insurance on triple A is not too bad at all.

as for the lead foot that does have potenetial. but with unisettings you can lower the top speed of the car if you choose, i would do that if i gave it to my sister. never could see over 72mph

 

We used Blizzaks on our 1.8 and had no trouble running in the winter in the Michigan snow belt. It's a good winter driver. 4WDs are even better.

 

On performance tires they completely SUCK in the snow (I literally spun out the first turn out of my sub-division going only 25 mph!). Put on some snow tiress, though, and it rides like a snowmobile. Quattro with snow tires is a phenomenal combo!

If your budget is tight, get steel wheels - they are dirt cheap. Even low end snow tires should do a fantastic job for grip, as well.
