Default gas gauge problems!

the car said i had a little over a half left in the tank and then i went to wendys and as i was leaving it shot down all the way and the light came on with all the bells and whistles luckily there was a gas station right there put in 10 bucks cause i needed to get to work which was like not even 2 miles away went to work on break went in the car turned it on and the needle showed that i had a little bit of gas just a little over the red part. well i get out of work turn the car on and it shoots back to half a tank so i went back to the gas station and filled it up but it only took about 20 bucks to fill her up which i thought was wierd cause it usually takes about 39-44 bucks and i did consider the 10 added earlier. is it the fuel level sending unit or is it the whole cluster? i asked my mech. a long time ago about the cluster and he said that when the cluster goes bad its jus the little screen part in the middle. is this true? i mean i know mines is gonna go out soon cause its starting to look like a tic tac toe board but do any of you guys know what the problem could be?

yep the whole instrument cluster is about to go...usually starts with the gas guage. It's a notorious problem with the TT, and it's not real cheap to fix. if you look around you can find them from time to time for 300-500 or something. my gas guage reads half when it's actually empty, but i'm not gonna spend 500 just for that sh$t

before you do that, get couple bottle of Techron and see if that helps. my gas gauge was going crazy like you said and Techron helped. It cleaned up the build-up on the gas level sensors.

My cluster went bad, started with the gas gauge then went to the temp gauge. My dealer split the cost of replacement with me under their "goodwill" policy even though my TT was waaaaay out of warranty. ( I have had multiple audi's serviced at this dealer) Good luck and use the DTE function on your cars computer to keep track of gas until you figure it out.
