As stated by VWAG, its a lifetime fluid and in not required to be replaced... but I would change it every 40K or so if you are using a aftermarket fluid

hmmmmm is it an auto? or a manual?? if auto the fluid is most common because it has a time to change factor approx 60k,
if manual then it could be the slave cylinder weeping fluid which amounts to poor gear change ( on the manual gearbox fluid has little to do with smooth gear change unless there is no gearbox fluid in there ) then the noise would be evident, im going for slave cylinder

the syncros in the TT suck Dave. The changing of fluid helps cure this.

you could use molly slip which is a synthetic additive for the transmission ( manual only ) this makes the gearshift much smoother and live longer
