It's the Intake Air Temp sensor, located off of the intake mani. I finally threw a cell, and was able to find out what was going on.
Apparently it's fairly inexpensive, but one of those fancy dealer only parts.

I just read in the vwvortex 1.8 forum that this is something you should pull and occasionally clean with electronics cleaner so I pulled mine and gave it a thorough cleaning. It looked a little gunky.
