Unhappy Help.. My new (2001) Audi has a turbo issue

Hello everyone,

This is my first AUDI so I am in need here. Thanks!

A week ago tomorrow I purchased a 2001 Audi tt 1.8t 180 model. Right off the bat I noticed two things... One, the previous owner has installed a boost gauge on the dash and two, the ESP button was pushed up into the dash.

It drove well and knowing nothing about turbo charging (this is my secong turbo ever and my first was an old VW jetts TDI so nothing much to compare to) When I got it home however (3rd day) I started watching the boost gauge. I was told that the stock boost was around 9-10 PSI but mine was tapping 15.

It would build quickly to 15 but the I hear pressure leak off and it falls to zero and then slowly builds back up to 15 before falling again.

Now on day 4 I got a shock (a nice one) when I noticed that it was holding it's pressure. Now for two days in a row it was topping at 19psi and would stay there if I kept my foot in it... and a positive side effect was it pushing my eyeballs back into my head! :-)

Today however it is back to topping around 15 and falling off... What could this be?

I am also curious about the ESP button... what is up with that?

Thank you for anyone's response!!

You are chipped, and it sounds like the stock diverter valve is bad causing you to not be able to hold the boost well. Not sure about the esp button, someone may have broke it.

Chipped... wow. the dealer didn't know that.

It has an after market BOV on it as well. Silver thing with a huge exit cone. Replacement suggestions? Is 20psi safe with these cars?

Thank you by the way for taking the time to reply

Looks like a GFB hybrid. Just make sure that bov part on top is closed and not venting air when the car is idling. Also that blue hose it long as hell and it doesnt need to be. But the thing that concerns me is, is there a clamp on the bottom side of that bov that connects it to the intake?

It says GFB on the top and it also says 1000 3-5....

Yes there is a clamp and what am I closing? I see a brass(looking) connection on the passengers side of the valve that screws in and out. How would this cause my psi to die off at 15 sometimes but other times his 20+ and hold?

I never have liked turbo...

It could be just that its a small turbo and its just not holding boost, which it doesnt do well. You wont always hit peak unless you go wot.

If you dont like turbo cars, wtf did you get a TT?

I got a really good buy + they are great looking cars... and I don't hate turbo. I hate the extra issues that come along with turbo.

What I'm still really fuzzy on is why it will hold the 20+ boost all day some days but others it won't hold 10?

I can hear it letting go of air at 14-15 psi on the off days. and then some days it's a freaking street rocket (to me) and can build to and stay at 20+ all day long.

I'm not a turbo guy (obviously) but it seems off that it hits 15 and falls to zero and never finds a happy medium or holds. just builds and falls builds and falls...

check the piping for a boost leak and also the wastegate area to make sure it isnt loose.
