i understand your points and where you are coming from, but i think some people get lost in the BHP chasing phenomenon... they buy a car on finance and then finance the mods too which when all is said and done costs more than going out and buying something else in the first place... that was my point.
I've had a number of Evo's, my latest being a strokered 9 running 450 on its minimum setting! it was great, but when pushed towards its limits by upping the boost and changing maps the reliability was suspect, as it is in many other cars.
The audi tt is a very nice car, hence why i bought one for the wife and for me to play around in over the weekend.... but a porsche 911 it aint, and regardless of how attached to your tt you may be, you can't say its in the same league as the Carrera like for like? Porsche will always have a better brand association than audi, thus more prestige. The E46 M3 is easily distinguishable from an average 3 series, but again i see your point regarding the tt's appeal. Dont get me wrong, i love my tt..... but would i swap it for a 911? everyday of the week! lol

I think there are plenty of us who would swap for a 911 but the point is, well for one, I think it's WHP 99.9% of the people chasing numbers is after not BHP...and two, the 1.8T can be safely, reliably driven at high HP if done correctly...there are tons of BT TTs, GTIs, and other 1.8s out there that have BT and are daily driven...If you were suspect about driving a boosted evo at high HP you were doing it wrong.
The TT isn't really a 1/4 mile straight line car. You could buy a DSM and make it an 11 sec car with just a few grand into the whole thing if you want a fast 1/4 car. The thing with our cars is the potential they have when in their proper element, which seems to be auto-x and general fun-having. Not to say there aren't fast TTs that have awesome 1/4 mile times... just that drag strips aren't really their forte'.
oh yea i knew that but 12's is deff respectable. and to be able to handle the way the TT does that is a dream come tru. i had a dsm well i had 3 of them. i'm an all around type of person, that is why i love my TT it's different fast handles and has comfort for the two people that you fit in it.
I'm debating putting a link to Shepard's 7 sec, full interior, street legal 1g DSM that would shut that TT down. Then there would be 'nuff said.
The TT is an awesome car, and with enough $ anything is possible, but for the most part the common TT enthusiast won't see performance like that. DSMs are a dime a dozen and quite common to find in the 12 or even 11 sec range with somewhat minimal cost compared to our cars.
Anybody that purchased a TT to be an all out high HP brute was either misinformed of their potential, or has the $ necessary to make it so. Some of us who aren't quite on the baller status level, who don't have 5K to throw into an engine and then another 2k to finish the project with required supporting mods for so much power could benefit very well from a cheaper car with more potential.
DSM or EVO... you can look at a 4g63 with a glare and it would gain more power. It is one of the most efficient turbo 4 engines ever created. An EVO can be had for nearly the same price as a TT, and for a smaller amount of $ invested in go-fast goodies, you can produce a faster machine. But both those cars have their drawbacks and that is where the TT can win over a potential buyer like myself.
