Default Hub Centric Rings Questions

Today I ordered hub centric rings for my O.Z.'s. Tire Rack indicicated that for O.Z. rims they require rings that are 68"x57"mm. I was trying to get an understanding for what the dimensions represent. I get that the ring fits around the hub and fills in space between the hub and the rim giving it a tight fit so the rotation is more stable. My question(s) is how much space is being taken up by the ring? How much stress is being put on the lugs to compensate? Has anyone driven on rims with no rings and what are the effects? I wont get them for 2-3 business days, can I drive my car to work (4 miles each way) if I do 40-45mph? Thanks. Trying to not screw these. up.

Without the rings the wheels will be off balance. This will cause your car to vibrate horribly at high speeds. The ring centers the wheels on the hub to allow a perfect/balanced fit.

I figured as much. I have collected a fair amount of general knowledge. I was hoping for specifics which seems to be hard to find. Dig that Transformer TT.

You have to be careful about those rings. Sometimes if you get the plastic ones they have a lip on one side that can wreck havok with your balance. The lip will prevent the wheel from sitting all the way on the hub/spacer = baaad vibrations man. Trust meI know. I'm currently running without them for this reason. If you tighten the wheels while they are mounted in the air then you will not have any problems without the rings. They do make it a lot easier tomount though.Just remember to tighten in a star pattern!

I believe I understand the purpose of the hub-rings. My question is did you know that you would need them when you bought the wheels? When buying wheels is there more we need to look for other than bolt pattern - offset etc? In other words, if the wheels are supposed to fit our model Audi is there a possibility that we may need hub-rings, or anything else special in order for them to fit correctly?

The majority of aftermarket wheel have much larger diameter hubs than what is needed because every manufacturer uses different sizes. My Bimmer was like 74mm but my Audi is 57.1mm Most after market wheels are 70mm or larger. You compensate by using hubrings. They aren't totally necessary, but they help immensly.
