I might be leaving the forums :( and .....
i will base my decision on how they drive...i gotta tell you my TT is pretty fast and handles like a dream plus i know the maintence history of it....i hate buying used cars...
My dad borrowed his freinds 997TT for a week and holy hell that **** was so fast. At like the first four upshifts it slams your head back in the seat. Porsche's 6speed tranny is also way better than audi's. If you can afford it i would definatly buy it.

simple concept, difficult application. I'd love to use a VVT in my car, but its a bitch in an aftermarket situation.
pretty simple concept/mechanism actually

I love 996's and 997's. I was looking at a 996 carrera before getting the TT. Watch out for the rear main seal issues with these cars. It's not proven, but it seems less prone to the turbos. I was trolling 6speedonline for a while before deciding not to get it. Search for "RMS issue" on the forums. I'm sure you'll change your own oil, but if you don't, it'll cost you a few hundred dollars. I called some local shops and got crazy prices. Tires go quick too. I forgot the other little things. I regret not getting it, so go for it.. Good Luck.
Played around with a 911 GT3 RS, with Dealer Plates, yesterday on I-95. Black with orange accent stripes, wheels and carbon fiber wing, mirrors - yellow brake calipers. Not my favorite color combination, but a real beast. Rear tires were @18". I tried to subtly egg him on but he ignored my TT and kept cruising @100mph. I finally exited in my single tip feeling pretty meak.
ive spent a good 9k in mods and maintence on my TT and love how it drives now....way better than stock and pretty fast...after i drive these cars....911 turbo, 2004 BMW M3, and 2006 porsche caymen S then i will decide...
