Default I'm confused about Code Scanners

The CEL is on in my 01 225 AMU, and I have determined it to be a dirty maf (again). The guys at autozone scanned it for me, but are not allowed to clear the code (wtf!). I can prob find a place that is allowed to clear the code, but I would like my own scanner anyway.

I've been looking on ebay, and i'm really not sure what to get. I know everyone talks about veg-com software, but I don't really want to hook up my laptop. I would prefer just using a dedicated tool. I found this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CAN-B...spagenameZWDVW

that seams pretty useful, but I can only use that on vw/audi, right? I really would prefer something I could use on all or most cars. Would a regular scanner beable to read and reset codes on an audi, and just not be able to access all the other functions veg-com does? Really, right now all I need to do is read and reset codes and would rather have a tool that I could use on all my cars, rather then just the audi.

TIA

Do it right and just pick up a copy of VagCom and a cable from http://ross-tech.com

wow that looks like a full vagcom in one tool. and it's can-bus compatible. if it does odb2 then it should pretty much do anything from like '96 and newer.

it does look like a good deal because it see all the systems and can clear all fault codes so worth the money ( it wont work on the older cars 2001 or older because it has CANBUS and the early systems dont have it ) so chances are it only does basic engine management codes and not ABS/AC but I know VAG do one like that ( VAG is the best if all your fixing is VW/AUDI/SKODA ) I use ELM327 because it works on everything cough well most cars

Truely, VAG is your best option, I really can't give an opinion for anything else.

If you're not happy with the price of a vag-com cable, then all you have to do is advertise locally that you're able/willing to scan and clear codes for vw/audi vehicles, and charge $10. People are usually happy to pay considering the other option is $70 at the dealer.

For almost a year I charged a 12 pack of beer for a scan, about $13 a scan money-wise...
