Default I'm looking into buying an Audi TT (2000-2001)

Hey everyone,

Last week I totaled my 7 series . Needless to say it was a bummer. However it does give me an excuse to buy a new car! I've wanted a TT now for years, always enjoyed the looks, style and performance. I've test driven a few Audi TT's over the past few days. Actually took out a 2003 Audi TT today. From what I’ve read aesthetically they have remained unchanged from 2000 – 2006. Is this correct? From my research the 2000/2001 Audi seems to be the best fit for me financially. Is there a difference between the two? Also is there a huge difference between a non-Quattro and Quattro machine? I’m going to be driving it mostly as a daily driver, so I don’t plan on racing the machine. However I would like a quality machine. Do they break down a lot? What are common problems you have with yours? Anything as a whole to watch out for…common problems? I will be running a vin check on every car I look at.

If you have any suggestions please fill me in! I would like to know as much as possible about these machines before I dive in.

Also do all models come with Xeon lights?

I can't find a thread pointing me to a lot of good TT websites for parts, DIYs, mods, engine specs, etc... Anyone know of it?

Wow, sweet name... sounds like were in the same boat. What year 7 did you have? I'm rolling a 3 right now and I have a year to find a new ride. I already ex'ed out my first two choices, the 350z (shitty reliability, not a daily, not enough space) and the G35 (glorified 350z, many of the same problems) the next research topic is the TT.

From my research, it seems like the dependability is a little less than average, it also seems like the 01's are prone to a lot of weird things.

Also, is this the BEST TT board? When I got my BMW I filtered through about 4 BMW forums before finding the best one with the most information for my car...

That was my first post in this forum. So im not sure which one is the best yet. I had a 95 bmw 740i. I also have a 325i (e30) and an 02 c240. anwyays I loved my 7 series. Never gave me a problem. I babied it ...loved it...than totaled it. STUPID BLACK ICE! Anyways I still have lots of questions reguarding these TT's ..from what I see the only major difference between the 00 and the 01 is a CD player. Which to me isnt a big deal....I'll put an aftermarket stereo in it anyways.

I just really want to know if there is a HUGE difference between the quattro system and FWD.

Thanks!

Hey guys...

I have had my 2000 for three years and it's been great. Here's the rundown..

The car is basically unchanged from 2000-2006. There are three engines available two turbos 1.8L 180 HP, 1.8L 225 HP (same engine bigger turbo, injectors and strengthened internals) and the 3.2 V6 normally aspirated. In the early years you could get the 180 HP both in the FWD and Quattro versions, later in 2002 or 2003 the 180 was reserved for the FWD models. In 2004 they introduced the 3.2L V6 with the DSG tranny.

Both the 180 and 225 are very tuneable. Chips can boost HP by around 30-40 HP, and upgraded stage 3 turbos can gain 100+. Overall the engine is very reliable and durable. The only downside is that the timing belt needs to be changed every 60,000 miles ($800 at an independant shop).

There is a problem with the instrument cluster on about 5-10% of the cars that require repair or replacement. I've been lucky so far but who knows.

I'm sure you've already noticed there are Coupe and Roadster versions, the Coupe has a basically worthless rear seat (small children and adults under 4-11) so I keep my down 99% of the time. The Coupe does have ample space for road trips.

Go cruise around the Audiworld TT Forum There is an informal FAQ thread as well.
For mods check out..

APR
ECSTuning
TTStuff

There are many many more, but that will give you a flavor for them.

Click on the link in my sig for my Fotki photos. If you click on the About Me link you can scroll through what I have done and near the bottom you will find a link to many other TT owners pages with pics and how-to's on mods.

Yes, mine is a 180HP Quattro. I don't have the turbo upgrade... .yet.. but that is in the plans for the future. With the chip, exhaust, intake, brakes, coilovers and some other mods I am pretty satisfied with my performance on the street and the track.

There are basically 3 Turbo upgrade packages out there than are in the $5000 range. APR, Dahlback, and Del Rio, make kits that you can DIY or have someone install them for you. There are a few other one-off turbo upgrades but they are more expensive.

The simplest is a chip flash... that runs less than $500 which will gain you 30 HP on pump gas, a 100-octane race gas chip program will pick up 40-50 HP. You have a choice from APR, GIAC, REVO. All have different programming levels for different octane fuel. Depending on the version you get it will range from a simple flash through the OBDII port to a soldered chip in the ECU itself. I have an APR soldered chip with three programs on it, 91 octane /100 octane / stock. The nice thing with this one is that it is programmable using the cruise control stock, so switching programs takes about 30 seconds and you don't need any other tool with you.

Freeing up the exhaust and intake will also help. For the exhaust there are several cat-back solutions from APR, NEUSPEED, JETEX, to name a few. The intakes range from a cold air intake from Injen to custom intakes like the TTDA and VTDA from The Modshack. The ModShack is the brainchild of one of the members of the Audiworld Forum.. Steve Schwing. It's different from most other cold air intakes by keeping the intake shielded from engine compartment heat and the ability to route cold air intake via hoses from the grill.

I personally have an APR cat-back and a TTDA with twin cold air feeds from the grill.

I'm very excited for a TT. Is there anything as a whole I should look for? From what im reading I should ask the previous owner when the timing belt and water pump have been changed. If they haven't change it myself the second I get the car. I was also wondering what most of you use for oil. In my bmw I used only full synthetic. Do most people here use a blend?

Thanks.

Full synthetic is best. I run 5w40 Redline in mine. If you stick with Redline or Mobil 1 you'll have no problems. Not much to look for beyond the Timing Belt. When the belt is changed it is important that the tensioner and the water pump get changed out, the stock one has a plastic impeller and is usually shot when it comes out.

Try to get one with a good maintenance record. The Haldex needs to be serviced on the Quattro's every 20K, it's a filter and fluid change.
