Intake Question
I want to buy an intake, but i have no idea what to get. And i was looking around the engine today and it seems like it would be pretty hard to install. Any suggestions? and will this effect my ecu at all?
I purchased my TT with a neuspeed intake/stock ecu....runs great and you can hear that turbo a lil better. Overall I like it but....
I have been told by a mechanic at Black Forest Motors that OAI are not the best option for these cars because of the heat that builds up under the hood. He said the stock system brings in much cooler air. Cooler air=more 02 molecules =more horsepower. So, according to this theory....OAI can cause the car the run a little rich.
As far as intallation goes im not real sure....the neuspeed intake is very simple...it seems like it would be an easy mod.

There is no gains with an intake. They are simple to install, so much that you can just remove the airbox and add on a cone filter. The oil from the filter (if you use an oiled filter) can mess with the maf if its over oiled.
Plenty of intake threads if you search for them

well if people would actaully take the 10mins to search and read the results they wouldnt need to start the same threads that are coverd in length over and over. Plus, it gets old having to repeat posts to explain to the next person what is going on. Since i know you wont search.....
The stock box draws in air from the fender behind the battery. A filter in the same location will draw in the SAME temp air as the box (even the stupid covered intakes). There have been 2 test that i have seen that show the temp in that location is only a few degrees warmer when the car moves than the outside air temp... so a cai will have no gain either. The only way you are going to see a gain from air temps is by changing out the ic for something more efficient. The only thing that matters on the intake is FLOW and since the intake on the stock turbos are under 2" big and have a low output, still no gain on increasing flow since the stock box will flow more than enough.
All this you would of got with a simple search and i didnt have to add post #16,665 which im sure 10k of them are repost since people refuse to read the FAQ's and use the search function.

While it may only be a few degrees difference, this does catalyze a change in air/fuel ratio. In warmer temperatures, air is less dense (less combustible oxygen), this will cause MPG to decrease. So, in warmer temperatures you will use more fuel and this could potentially make the car run rich if the air/fuel ratio is not adjusted perfectly.
I noticed you said the temperature is very similar when the car is moving. This is because at low speeds there is more heat building under the hood. Thus, this can make a larger impact when driving in the city.
Considering the stock intake does not have substantial "flow" issues...just stick with that one...you will bring in cooler air, and get better MPG. Plus, ive had to clean my MAF several times.
The outside air will have 0 effect on the a/f ratio. The o2, maf, and map all keep it within spec. And you are wrong, the mpg goes down as the temps drop. If you think that temps effect the a/f that much, then you would never be able to live in a place that the weather goes from 95* in the summer to 20* in the winter.....
The temps balance back out very quickly, if you are moving that slowly and in stop and go traffic, you wont see boost and this argument is pointless....
The only reason for an intake is sound. Again, you are wrong again (since i said this already) the airbox is taking in the same air temps as a filter on the maf. Most just drill holes in the bottom of the box to have access to more air and more sound.
Please read and stop giving misinformation

I live in Indiana, so I do see MPG differences when seasons change.
And again, it may be subtle but if you remember back to my first post in this thread... The mechanic said that the OAI MAY not be the best option for these cars, because there IS a difference in temp under the hood, and the air that a stock intake will be breathing from the outside. He reccomended that I put the stock intake back on for these various reasons.
Cincy, I have not been around here long but you seem to be a great asset to the forum. BUT in a lot of your post you just redicule people for asking questions, instead of using the search tool. THIS IS A FORUM, this is where people come to ask common questions, this is how we get new members. If questions that may be obvious to you are asked, and it annoys you....don't bother responding.
This is now going to be the 3rd time i have said this.... The airbox takes in air from the SAME place as all the other intakes.
You are right, this is a forum, but wasting peoples time with things that are posted in the FAQ for a reason and in a easy search is just annoying to anyone that has been here more than a couple months. There is 0 reasons for more than basic questions that are posted atleast weekly. People need to stop acting like they need spoon fed every last bit of information
