A lot of people have open air intakes. Some where the airbox used to be and some located behind the front bumper near the bottom. I personally have a modshack intake (found here) <--- dont be hatin Nate.

Its a K&N cone inside an insulated housing. I'm into it because of the asthetic factor and the sound it produces. Some people think its a waste of money.

either get a drop in or put a cone filter on your maf. All will do about the same for performace. Cone will give you noise and the drop in wont

Cause it is. Heat is not a problem with a turbo car since it gets super heated by the turbo

I use a drop in & I can hear my d/v so much easier now. Gains? Maybe like 1/10 of a hp. I dunno.

After having the Modshack intake on my 02 TT I have gone back to the K&N drop in for my new TT as I didnt want to spend $300 for an intake that didnt really add anything. If I want the loud sound then I will just add an exposed cone filter and not buy the expensive intakes online. I just didnt see any gains from the expensive ones on my old TT that a drop in didnt get.
